It's not flimsy, but it's no toughbook.I have also considered the same scenario in the past. * "Ruggedized" laptop doesn't mean as much when you use a solid state drive as the old spinning disks. * Specs aren't bad, but not SUPER high end. It's actually a 25 pin serial port, and comes with an adapter to the "more modern" 9 pin we usually see. * Has a built in serial port, for connecting to god knows what. This comes in handy more than you might expect. * They have easily swappable hard drives. I'd recommend having AT LEAST one of these in your plant/integration house, because sometimes you just need to flash the card directly. If you don't have the PG, you need an expensive proprietary USB dongle to do this. * It has a built in S7-300/S7-400 memory card readers, if that's relevant. * It has a built in Profibus port, if that's something you mess with. This can save a lot of time & frustration. * Most Siemens software is preinstalled, if you don't already have an image you use. Dunno how much, probably not enough to really balance things. There is a discount available if you buy licenses when you buy the Siemens Field PG. Most people I see use the gaming laptop, especially if they aren't buying new licenses and PC at the same time.
